In South Africa, Eco holds direct working interests in two offshore Blocks, Block 2B and Block 3B/4B, in the Orange Basin. Please explore the map below to learn more about Eco’s exploration activities in South Africa.
Block 2B is located in the Orange Basin and covers 3,062 km2 off the west coast of South Africa 300 kilometres north of Cape Town with water depths ranging from 50 to 200 meters.
The Gazania-1 well on Block 2B, spudded on October 10, 2022, reached target depth of 2,360m but did not show evidence of commercial hydrocarbons. The well was plugged and abandoned as planned.
Block 2B already has a previous light oil discovery, AJ-1, drilled in 1988 by Soeker, an offsetting strat well, that proved the presence of high quality oil in the area. Thick reservoir sandstones were intersected between 2,985 meters and 3,350 meters. The well was tested and flowed 191 barrels of oil per day of 36 degree API oil from a 10 meter sandstone interval at about 3,250 meters.
The JV Partners submitted a Production Right Application to the Petroleum Agency of South Africa (“PASA”) on November 15, 2022, for Block 2B, based on the existing oil discovery of AJ-1 and potential future operations.

The 3B/4B licence was previously held by BHP Billiton who acquired a 10,000km² GeoStreamer 3D survey in 2012, which the block 3B/4B JV Partners reprocessed in 2022 and is being used to high-grade the leads and prospects towards drilling targets.
